Self-Care: 6 ways to look after yourself in 2019

For some people, self-care is completing a to-do list or finishing chores around the house, and for others, it’s a bubble bath or taking a walk in the park – taking regular time out of your normal routine to do something for you, can be hugely beneficial.

But practising self-care in 2019 can be difficult, with many seeing it as overindulgent, choosing to prioritize work and productivity over everything else.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care promotes the idea that your physical and mental health is just as important as anything else in your life. Working self-care practices into your daily routine can help manage stress and anxiety, giving you the energy to tackle anything life throws your way.

One of the biggest criticisms of the self-care movement is a lack of accessibility, so here is a list of self-care ideas that won’t break the bank:

1. Celebrate yourself

People often forget about the journey and focus on the destination. Take some time to celebrate how far you have come and all the little victories along the way – being able to focus on your values, rather than specific goals, can lead to an increased sense of well-being.

2. Go somewhere beautiful

Treat yourself to some time away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether you head out into the wilderness, or visit a local cathedral, taking time to be mindful of the beauty around you can put things into perspective and provide clarity of thought.

3. Get creative in the kitchen

Whether you’ve been eyeing up mouth-watering creations on Instagram or getting inspired by the Great British Bake Off, some creativity in the kitchen is good for your diet and your mind.

4. Change your routine

Take a new route home, order something unexpected at the bar, go for a walk at lunch – whatever it is, get out of your comfort zone – achievements are not tied to productivity sometimes you need an easy win.

5. Create a quiet space

Sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is just a little peace and quiet. Grab your favourite blanket, some comfy pillows, and light your favourite smelling candle – just sit back, relax, and forget about the world for a while.

For the more adventurous types, you could read a book, or focus on something mindful like colouring or starting a jigsaw.

6. Spend time with people you love

Spend time with the people you care about or make you feel good – prioritise this social time and build it into your weekly routine.
